Prepaid Lessons, Cancellations & Refunds
Last updated: October 2026
1. Written terms for advance payments
When you pay for a lesson package in advance, that money is paid to your instructor for lessons you have not yet taken. We do not hold, monitor or release money lesson by lesson: once you have paid, your arrangements are between you and your instructor, and are governed by trust and the ADI Code of Practice set out below.
2. What instructors must do
Every instructor we introduce you to agrees to the following as a condition of taking bookings through us:
- Account for every advance payment you make and give you clear written terms covering cancellations and refunds
- Safeguard prepaid funds that relate to lessons not yet delivered
- Deliver the lessons paid for, or refund the value of those not delivered
- Give you reasonable notice of any cancellation and offer an alternative date
These commitments come from the voluntary ADI Code of Practice, which the DVSA Registrar treats as evidence of whether an instructor remains a fit and proper person.
3. Cancelling a lesson
Please give at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or move a lesson, otherwise the lesson may still be charged. Your instructor should give you at least 48 hours' notice of a cancellation, and where they cancel at short notice the lesson should be rebooked at no cost to you.
4. Refunds on prepaid lessons
If lessons you have already paid for are not delivered, ask your instructor for a refund of the undelivered hours first. A refund is normally calculated on the hourly value of your package. Where your lessons were funded through Pay Later Finance, the refund should reduce what you owe under your credit agreement.
5. If a refund is refused
Report the problem to us and we will take it up with the instructor, using the payment records we hold for your booking. We cannot order an instructor to refund you, but an unreasonable refusal, or a pattern of undelivered prepaid lessons, is exactly what we escalate to the DVSA.
6. Escalation to the DVSA ADI Registrar
Instructors on the ADI register are expected to follow the voluntary ADI Code of Practice, which includes accounting for advance payments and safeguarding prepaid funds. The Code is guidance rather than statute, but the Registrar uses it as evidence when reviewing whether an instructor remains a fit and proper person. Where undelivered prepaid lessons or a refused refund are not resolved, a complaint can be escalated to the Registrar at instructorconduct@dvsa.gov.uk. The Registrar may issue a formal warning, suspend, or remove the instructor from the ADI register.
